History of Sports Betting in Wyoming

Wyoming began exploring onshore sports betting after the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PAPSA) was unconstitutional, opening the door for sports betting expansion

The first bills aiming to legalize sports betting were proposed in 2020 but did not advance. In March 2021, a bill focusing on online sports betting passed with minor modifications and was signed into law in April 2021 by Governor Mark Gordon

Recent Developments

  • In September 2021, online sports betting became legal in Wyoming, with BetMGM and DraftKings being the first operators granted licenses
  • Subsequently, FanDuel and PointsBet were also granted licenses to operate legal online sports betting in the state
  • Caesars Sportsbook went live in Wyoming in June 2023, adding to the options available to sports bettors
  • The total handle for sports betting in Wyoming has been increasing steadily since its legalization, with significant growth observed within months of its introduction

Future Outlook

  • While currently only offering online sports betting, there is hope that retail sportsbooks may open in Wyoming in the future
  • Tribal casinos in Wyoming have Grade III status, potentially allowing them to offer sportsbook services if they choose to do so
