Where can I bet on sports in Illinois?
Illinois lawmakers went through a contentious negotiation process to legalize sports betting, which was eventually passed as part of a larger capital bill on June 3, 2019. Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the bill on June 28, 2019, after it was included in the bill to ensure its passage during a lengthy legislative session. The legislation, SB 690, is over 900 pages long and covers a wide range of topics.
Nearly nine months after the bill was signed into law, on March 9, 2020, the first legal sports bet was placed in Illinois at Rivers Casino, which is owned by Rush Street Interactive, a Chicago-based company. This was a momentous occasion, especially since it took place just before the COVID-19-related shutdown of professional sports across the U.S.
